Research Presentations are up to 45 min talks on your recent results and progress.  Use ~10 minutes for background to remind everyone what you are working on and what are your current goals.  Students in their fourth or fifth year or postdocs may use Powerpoint if they so desire.  Everyone else uses the whiteboard. One or two other coworkers may be randomly called on to present a short summary (~15 minutes) or recent work.

Literature Presentations should be 45-minute to 1-hour long presentations (~30–40 slides) on a topic of broad interest and utility or a detailed summary or recent progress in one area (i.e. several papers, not just one).  Please clear the topic with me before beginning work.  Examples of broad topics might be “Glycosylation Reactions”, “Inverse Electron-Demand Diels-Alder Reactions”, “oxy-Cope Reactions”, “Synthesis of Hydroxylamine”, etc.  Examples of recent progress might be “Organocatalytic Mannich Reactions”, “Progress towards the Synthesis of Palau’amine”, “C–H Activation of Terminal Olefins”, “Olefin Cross Metathesis”, “Site-Specific Chemical Modification of Proteins”, etc.  The slides should be made available as PDF files. These will be made occasionally by 1st–3rd year students. The topics will usually, but not always, be assigned.

Synthesis and Mechanism should focus on one total synthesis paper or a couple closely related mechanism papers. A senior grad students (4th and above) or postdoc will serve as the discussion leader, but everyone is expected to participate. The paper(s) to be discussed should be distributed to the entire group on the Monday prior to the group meeting. In the case of a total synthesis everyone will be assigned a step to explain and give the mechanism at the group meeting, so come prepared! For example, the preparation of key starting materials and reagents, if not addressed in the text, should be looked up. If there are reactions that you are unfamiliar with, you should make sure you understand the transformation and the mechanism. The discussion leader should be aware of prior work (similar reactions, prior syntheses of the same molecule, etc.). The papers will usually be assigned by the advisor, in consultation with the discussion leader.

Chemists. The presentation of your chemist should take less than 5-minutes.  The summary should include the person’s background, current institution, 5 selected references, and a few key reactions, structures, molecules, images, etc.  If it is reasonably up to date, most of this information can be obtained from a department’s faculty page.  Please bring handouts for everyone.
